Reuben Houfe wins Yellow Pencil award

IT was the very first time that final-year students on the University of Huddersfield’s Multimedia Design course were urged to enter their work in some of the creative industry’s most prestigious awards schemes.  And they scooped a string of prizes.

Every year the organisation named Design and Art Direction – known as D&AD – runs competitions and exhibitions that showcase the work of professionals and talented newcomers in the field.  Multimedia Design tutors at Huddersfield decided it was time that their students, using their final-year projects, showed what they could do.  And they rose to the challenge.

At a ceremony held in London’s Spitalfields, Reuben Houfe came away with one of the most coveted awards in the design industry – the Yellow Pencil – for his animation “Design Out Crime”.

Meanwhile, Chris Boardman was named a winner in the D&AD’s Best New Blood Competition for an i-Phone application, a game named “Cloud Hopper”.

Another University of Huddersfield entrant in the New Blood contest was Pawel Godlewski, with an example of computer graphics titled “Peter and the Wolf”.  The editor of “Digital Arts” selected this for inclusion in the July issue of the magazine, part of a feature headed “Best of New Blood”.

The success rate for final-year Multimedia Design students justified the decision to urge them to set their sights on prestigious national competitions.  Principal lecturer Derek Hales said that in the past there had been plenty of success for students in regional contests and he was delighted that this had been followed up by awards and recognition at a national level.

The opportunity to meet and impress industry leaders at the D&AD events has helped Multimedia Design students make contacts and find employment in this competitive field.  For example, Best New Blood winner Chris Boardman has landed a job in a New York advertising agency.

The Multimedia Design course, which has been running for 12 years in the University of Huddersfield’s School of Art, Design and Architecture, covers a wide range of digital design topics.  And, as the D&AD successes show, students are equipped to use the latest technology.
