The economy’s influence on 2010 color and trends

Are we forecasting and leading? Or maintaining and following?

“As part of my color strategy presentation at the HOW Conference in Austin last June, I spoke about the differences between trend spotting and trend forecasting. The majority of the trend work and trend services offered in our industry today are based on identifying new products and services that are just entering the market or will be released soon. When we visit product and design shows or do retail audits we are trend spotting. The products we see and identify are real—they are already here today. If all we do is trend spot, we will always be trend followers!

To be true trends leaders we not only need to be aware of what is in the market today, but we need to focus on the future through forecasting. Trend forecasting is based on the important influences that drive consumer behavior and how these drivers are likely to change the direction of current trends………..
