The art and science of folding could be considered to have evolved in two directions—how to avoid it (wrinkles and creases in clothing) and how to promote it to create various folds in the construction of objects (boxes, civil engineering). The ability of a material to fold (or not) is very much dependent upon the properties of the material and often a major reason for its implementation for an application.
